Welcome to the Microbial Biosignatures Lab (MISI).
At MISI, we explore one fundamental question: how does biology become geology? We investigate how biosignatures emerge, evolve, and persist under the influence of three fundamental controls: microbial interactions, microscale environmental heterogeneity, and preservation processes. By combining microbiology, geochemistry, ecology, biophysics, and astrobiology, we study how biological signals are generated within complex microbial ecosystems, shaped by chemical and physical gradients at the microscale, and ultimately preserved as traces of life in the geological record and beyond.
The MISI Lab is proud to be part of the newly established NCCR GENESIS, a Swiss research initiative dedicated to understanding how life emerges, evolves, and becomes detectable in the Universe. Within this interdisciplinary framework, we investigate how interactions among microorganisms shape the formation, transformation, and preservation of biosignatures across scales. By combining microbiology, geochemistry, ecology, biophysics, and astrobiology, we seek to understand how ecological interactions, microscale environmental heterogeneity, and evolutionary processes influence the signatures of life on Earth and potentially beyond our planet.
